Is the metal marked? If costume I doubt it is anything but glass. You will have to have the stone tested, there is no positive way to tell from a photo :)

Thanks for joining in on this theme!
Metal casing is marked 835 MA and a third mark that is blurred.
I know that 835 is marking of a lower quality sterling silver, but this looks like 14 ct gold and was made here locally.

It may be gold plate on silver. Sounds like you should have both the metal and stone tested

This is how you can check for glass, but first you cave to clean it. Soak it in warm water with a drop of dish soap and scrub with a soft tooth brush. Then look at the stone with a loupe or magnifying glass, if you see bubbles it's glass. If you don't see bubbles it may still be glass but it may be a stone as well.

If you get it tested come back and let us know what you have.

The black chicken with red comb is probably a Rhodesian Red race of Gallus domesticus, if I remember the name correctly...

Its 14 ct gold and synthetic ruby, according to my guy. He didnt look too sure on the stone though.

I'd say the value is pretty much the gold value. the setting is pretty cheap and the stone shows signs of wear and surface damage that I'd not expect from ruby, synthetic or natural.
