    Hello,

I purchased this little "purse" this morning.

The name looks to be William Facobien but I could very well be wrong!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Warmest regards,

Can't help you with the reading since you're not sharing it. :yuck:

    Stitching is probably German.

    Does the top close?

    Size?

Geez, Louise. Can you help us here. :shifty: :sorry::bigtears:   :yuck:

My guess is a gift bag with a bottle of brandy.

If I had not seen the initials WF, I would have thought the surname started with a J instead. Can't see any other interpretation of the rest of it than what you're seeing.

What does "Den" mean in the context of a date? Is that what makes you think it is German/Prussian? The name looks more French than German to me. William would be Wilhelm more commonly.

Wow, Scant, Best place to hide something == in plain site.
I thought that metal section was leather. That is really tough to decipher.

Yes, Den is German for "the." Doesn't fit in French at all. FacoBIEN doesn't translate much in comparison to such as Trudeau = roughly tip of water. Francoeur -= True heart, etc. But bien is not German either.

It seems to be a masculine item, especially when I though the top was leather, but not really something anyone would carry around. Reminds me more of an elaborate gift bag.

Bev aka thelmasstuff Colored pencil artist extraordinaire ;)

I think it would be fine if you took a sunshine cloth and cleaned up the metal so we could see the name better.

Excellent! So that F initial is actually a J after all!

Do you think it's Jacobsen or Jacobson?

I'd be more inclined to -sen. It may not be conclusive, but when you compare that letter to the earlier o, it's smaller and almost pointed at the bottom.

Thank you! I thought it looked more E like lol but wasn't sure if it was just smaller due to having to dip towards the N.

    Darn old handwriting!

You never know what your are gonna find at a flea market!

With that surname, and the pricked engraving, might consider Norwegian rather than German...

    I think Den 16 Mai 1838

means The 16th of May 1838.

I couldn't find anything significant. So maybe a document bag for ? ?

    Adding -
What would a gentleman want to keep from an important event like a Wedding, or a horse race, or what ever gentlemen did in 1838?
