Help with cleaning a piece of furniture

    Well I've tried hot sudsy water - nope. I've tried ammonia water - nope. It's certainly clean now if still streaky brown, green and blue - I might just repaint it, or hope someone comes in and wants it for real cheap so I don't have to!

    Would diluted vinegar work? We use it for a lot of our general cleaning these days and it does seem to do a good job cutting through oily stuff.

    There is a commercial product in Britain called Libnet from Liberon products that works wonders with removing crud without spoiling old finishes, but it's probably not available in the US. The 'Krud Kutter' may be the same thing with a more 'rude colonial' name. And spelling.
