Hi! Can anyone identify the marks on these plates? Can you also tell me how old you think these plates are? Here are the pictures....

Hi Juli - if they're real the KK mark would indicate 1787. If they're fakes I don't know how you could tell when they were made. I think you're right that they are fakes, though, because I don't think Sevres marks ever included a crown. Nice plates - I like the decoration.

It's a version of a French Sevres mark. It's one of the most faked marks but your plates look pretty nice. I don't know if yours are real or not but perhaps someone else will know.

Hi, Don and SIS! The only thing I know is that they are old and the hand painting is wonderful. I assumed the mark was a fake Sevres mark because I could not find the same style of crown on top of the double "L" mark. There was a mark in the 18th century that did include a crown on top. I found this info by downloading the PDF file on this web page at the Met Museum.

I was hoping someone had seen this mark before. Oh, also can anyone ID the type of bird on the second plate?

    Thanks for responding!

Is that a ladybug on the second plate? Does it cover a flaw in the glaze?

I think that bird is going to eat that ladybug so maybe it'll be easier to see in a second (couldn't help myself:D)

Yes, a lady bug but no flaw seen or felt under it. :)

It might be helpful if it were covering a flaw. With really early European porcelain the filtration of impurities was not always 100%, but the material was still too exotic to discard a piece for minor flaws, so tiny flaws on plated and such would be covered with a bit of hand painting - a bug or butterfly or blossom or some such. Having a bit of decoration serving such a purpose might help to indicate an earlier production.

hey are beautiful and they certainly give me the impression of being old, nut I don't think the quality is up to Sevres standards.

There are some obvious flaws on their backs, so that does go along with what you said about the porcelain being too exotic to discard. Would be nice to be able to ID the maker on these! I just can't find any similar marks, except, of course, Sevres. "Sevres-style" will probably have to go in the title, at this point, IF I decide I can part with them. :)

    Thanks for responding.
