    Hello everyone,

Some time ago i came across this symbol - after a lot of hours of re-search and a lot of effort to understand what is it, i find myself in a same spot where i started.

No one who i met in person regarding this piece- no one could tell anything to me - just pure guesses with no real facts.

I would very grateful if someone could help me on this one - or to refer me to book or somewhere else who possibly could know "what is it".

Bottoms area, where mark is - isn't flat - so in real life, that area doesn't "get in contact" with surfaces. Around that, it used to be porcelain, just worn off during "it's" life time.

I attached picture for your consideration.

    Thank you

    Hello,
despite the Chinese theme your tea caddy looks more like 18th c Delft ware to me. The mark reminds me also of these pieces, it is certainly not Chinese. I think your piece looks nice, but there are also lots of imitations from later periods, so maybe someone else who knows more about these wares can tell you if it is original!

Thank you for your replay - this is not delft ware, piece made out quality white kaolin.

In my opinion - chinese theme as you mentioned - i believe that theme itself been painted if i can express myself in that way - was painted experiencing real time event, i might be wrong of course.

And another thing worth to mention - marks itself, i think that is not just mark - possibly it could be pictographic symbol & could be symbolizing physical objects.

Gotta say, everything about it looks like a Delft tea caddy to me too - believe Mat's suggestion should be considered rather than dismissed...

I shake off delft ware possibility after i passed piece to laboratory for sampling regarding material used to make this piece - this is white kaolin - if delft ware been made out of white kaolin, i would consider this option as delft ware..does it makes any sense now why piece not delft ware?

2 samples been taken into the base - both returned same results - high quality kaolin.

Ok, if you tested it, then it must be porcelain... However I insist that this is NOT Chinese or Asian at all, you should look in Europe for comparable pieces.

Sadly - there isn't any similar pieces except - shape, colors and that it is made out of porcelain. If you will be able point you finger to similar mark - no matter where are you located in UK - lager and chat after is "on me" at some point:)

    if someone can beat this, not just with personal opinion - but with straight facts, i will be very grateful;

    i think:

*piece was painted experiencing real time event

*mark is pictographic symbol & could be symbolizing physical objects

P.S. - i have more information on "chinese theme" symbolism, but i will save for later - and i probably will be able to point my finger to few of them.

That mark looks like a fish with a B above it and a GF below. Maybe someone can recognize a factory mark from that.

If you click on the words Full Image after you upload, your pictures will appear in the thread and we wont' have to click on small images.

You can't have an object that used to be porcelain, it either is throughout or it isn't. This is tin glazed faience. Porcerlain is thin and translucent, for one thing. Simply because the glaze contains kaolin doesn't make it porcelain. Kaolin was mined in Cornwall - still is.

I agree it's not Asian, and suspect Dutch. The mark's familiar.

I am not gonna get involved into forum debate wars - if someone has real evidence i will gladly look at it if it's Dutch. Please don't get mistakes here - i am not trying to defend my opinion at any cost here - but so far, i just have different opinions from different people - with nothing to support peoples opinions - so this is "air".

If processed laboratory test regarding material not good enough - i don't have to add anything else..Cornwall is UK - right? i do not understand connection between Cornwall and Dutch ware..?

My statement about porcelain isn't opinion it is fact.

The relevance of Cornwall is that china clay - kaolin - was exported to our European neighbours. Cornish kaolin has a particular signature to it.

You are on a board with people here who have decades of experience. To suggest that is all "air", is insulting. I shall not reply further to you.

And it is still NOT porcelain.
