Chippendale couch

Looking for info on this piece. Was told it was worth some money

 

It appears to be a dramatically reupholstered late Victorian piece.

Whoever wanted to make it appear to be a pile of mattresses succeeded admirably. At least it looks comfortable but I don't think it would fetch all that much money. It would make a really great dog bed for an Irish wolfhound. That market may be a bit limited, though.

Glad you did not take it personally, some folk find criticism of their stuff akin to informing them that they are fat, ugly and way too smelly. But I reserve this for their items.

 

I love the carving. And the proportions don't seem as dangerous or as sloppy as that horrible fabric makes it out to be.

In a black leather, or blue pin-striped mohair or green vinyl it could become the hipsterest seating in a bar or coffee shop.

I don't know, I've always been a sucker for a good ball and claw.

 

IF, the seam in the middle of the back is removed, and IF the two cushions are replaced by one looooong one, and IF one finds an elegant material with which to reupholster, THEN one will have a proper Sofa, rather than a couch!

 

Does no one use the term "chesterfield" in the States?

In the States a Chesterfield is a sofa/couch with a low back and rolled over arms at the same height - usually upholstered with leather and tufted within an inch of its life............

unless you are talking about men's clothing...........then it is an overcoat....... so sloppy bachelors usually toss the chester' on the chester' instead of on the hang'em up...................

I always wanted a burgandy chesterfield sofa for my library, hell I wanted one for any room in the house.
I had a vintage bed spread in that fabric. If it were mine, it would have a deep jeweltone watered silk moire. It looks like the seam was added since the material was not wide enough for doing it right, that goes with the cushion also.

The library at one of my colleges had exactly as you describe, Mansons; it was dark green leather, tufted in great chubby masses, and so wide that if I sat on it, my legs were straight out in front of me.

 

Thanks for the chesterfield knock-knock jokes and the definitions. But here in Canuck-land, anything that resembles a couch or sofa is called a chesterfield. Chesterfield, aka sofa, is a three-seater whilst a love-seat is a two-seater.

 

What we call a "two-seater" down here, honey, is NOT a Chesterfield, sofa, or couch!

I wonder what's under all that upholstery at the top - when the bottom is that ornate a bit of wood element on the arms and back helps balance it. Makes it look less like a pile of pillows on a platform.

 

Some of "us" do, but "we" are usually referring to a specific design of coat/overcoat. I still have the "Chesterfield" camel-hair coat my mother bought for me when I was 12 years old. As with most mothers, it was bought with "room to grow into."

It is hanging in the back closet waiting patiently for any icy/snowy occasions when I will haul it out and wear it yet again.
