I was recently given this Masonic Knights Templar pin. Do the words "Damsacus Commandery" refer to the city of issue? (I mean as in "Damascus, Illinois")? And what does no. 58 indicate? On the back, the maker name is C.C. Braxmar Co. N.Y.

    Any and all information welcomed!

Damascus Commandery, #58 K.T. Is/was in the Brooklyn borough of NYC. This Commandery charter was granted in 1877. Commanderies are usually named after a distinguished individual, have a bibical reference, possibly a location, etc... I don't know if this Commandery is still going.

This Commandery is noted several times in the following online book,
Proceedings of the Grand Commandery, Knights Templar, State of New York, at Its Nintieth Annual Conclave, Volume 90, 1903.

    Specifically page 364:

Hoping to date this jewel, I tried to track down the Baxmar company. According to a short Bio on the founder's grave site, the company was founded in 1879 and incorporated in 1914. It was family owned until 2000. As the mark doesn't include "Inc." this jewel may date before 1914 when the company was incorporated??? The company made badges for fire, police and fraternal organizations.

Most lodges want the jewel back when the holder passes. My husband has his father's and the lodge asked for it, but he's a Mason so he kept it. When he's gone, we may return it since neither of the boys was interested
