This is an old copper repousse wall hanging of Apollo with his four horses Aethon, Pyrois, Phlegon, and Eous pulling his golden chariot pulling the Sun accross the sky that I purchased at the ts yesterday. The wall hanging measures about 13" in diameter and weighs about 5 pounds.

There are no maker marks that I can find on the wall hanging. I removed the back which is made of brass but could not reveal any more info on who made it. I was not able to locate another one like this one with internet searches.

There are some other figures on the wall hanging that I can't identify, any ideas on who they are? Also, does anyone know when and or where this may have been made and who might have made it or anything else about it? Thanks in advance for any info and replies.

Looks like it was die stamped and not repousse.

I can suggest two names you could follow up on ..

    1. Elkington

    2. Antoine Vechte

I looked them up because they were new names for me. They brought me to Hunt & Roskell and Morel Ladeuil, which brought me to this example (I had to refresh page several times before whole picture appeared):

The photo file is less finicky:

    https://4.api.artsmia.org/800/66518.jpg

The ladies all look like 'Pompeiian' ladies, i.e., like ladies in the frescoes found at Pompeii, Herculaneum, et al., & not meant to be anyone in particular.

It's all a neoclassical mishmash, more like the decorations Wedgwood used on its Jasper Ware when they stopped copying directly from engraved gems & started having original work made.

Referencing the first photo, the 2 ladies at 12 o'clock appear to be in the act of making an offering to the snake, except have got confused with the fronds on the tree. Which snake? The one associated with Aesculapius & health? The Python of Apollo? The one that sometimes accompanies Athena? Who knows.

The gents seem all to be the same basic figure with different accessories. The seated figure at 3 o'clock has the lion skin & club of Herakles/Hercules. The one at 5 seems to be a cross between Ares/Mars & Hermes/Mercury. Seven o'clock man is in a posture often associated with Poseidon when he is contesting Athens with Athena, except that P. is never shown as a young, clean shaven guy.

The central medallion also looks based on a standard image of Poseidon in his chariot drawn by marine horses/hippocamps, except, again, too youthful, with what might be the nimbus of Apollo, holding a staff that is not appropriate to either of them.

Not consistent with what I saw of Vechte/Hunt & Roskell or Morel Ladeuil/Elkington. Someone less concerned with detail & convention.

I think I was incorrect thinking the center medallion was Apollo. I now think it depicts Helios the God of the Sun (often represented as a youth with a rayed headdress) rising from the Sea or Oceanus (note the water ripples or waves under the horses) and drives his 4 horse chariot pulled by his four horses Pyrois, Aeos, Aethon, and Phlegon accross the sky daily.
