help with black bead necklace + tiny paperweight

hi folks, found these 2 today, only a pound each, looked interesting enough to buy

stones are cold, thought glass at first, but wanted to be sure

there is no clasp, am i right in thinking its just supposed to hang ?

little paperweight is 1 1/4 inches

any thoughts
appreciated

 

Obsidian possibly on the necklace. Yes, it just hangs. Worth a quid just for the beads.

I don't think that's a weight, I think it's a large marble which has sheared in half. Annealing fault probably.

 

Nice necklace....& I like the paperweight as a paperweight...

Do the bobbles seem to be made of the same material as the chips? Or are they much lighter for their size? They look like some kind of seed/nut. Chips could be obsidian, black onyx, schorl (black tourmaline), glass...

Oh. And is it meant to tie? What is it like stretched out?

 

Shine a light thru the beads,the large ones look a bit like garnet.

Looking closely the big beads are the same material as the littlins.

They have same surface marks, appropriate weight for size, and temperature

Laid out would be a straight line, with one biggin on each end

I suppose you could tie, or wear like a scarf also

Shining a light on them, they are opaque and black, the little areas in between the cracks looks a bit like coal ?

 

Is the necklace light enough in weight to be jet? If you live at Downton Abbey, you wear it draped around your neck with the bobbles hanging down your back.

Wrong shine for jet, and it would not have those striations.

 

Yeah sadly not obb, tried the scratch test as well, no brown mark

 

It is called a lariat necklace. You can either just let the ends hang, or tie them loosely.
I would think black onyx. Obsidian is slightly translucent, especially around the edges. It is also heavier than onyx.

You could always call it a lariat with rare chesticle finials.

 

The marble/weight looks cut more than sheared to me, but I'm not sure it makes any matter.

 

It has sanding/grinding marks at the 4/5 o'clock area.

 

You'd not sand or grind a paperweight base like that - they look like shear marks. Far too uneven as well.
