What af says is true enough. The one with the mother and child (?) might be Victorian. I say that because of the length of the pin and the barrel hinge but you'll really have to wait for the jewelry mavens to chime in. In the meantime... better photos, front and back, of both brooches, will make a big difference.

 

The middle slides in and out. Could it be a stamp holder maybe?

 

Maybe a photo holder? A type of locket? Does it slide all the way out?
