We purchased a house that was built in 1924. Most everything is still original. We found this oven in the pantry cabinet. I've looked on it and there isn't any information. It's hard wired into the house, it's cast iron and welded. That's all I know. Is it old?

Interesting link I found for Simplex Boston stove -- it doesn't look like your stove, but it may be a starting point for finding your stove.

There were some other links which came up in my search, but I thought you could "start" with this one which tells a bit about the company

Other people will be showing up with more (pertinent) information I am sure. ;)

Seems about right for that 20s date or just a bit later. Since it is in the pantry, I wonder if it is a plate warmer or proofing oven as opposed to a baking oven. Is that the control mounted below it?

    Hi,
Looks like it was "proofing". To keep the temp right for raising the yeast.

It's in almost pristine condition, so that's why I was wondering if you guys thought it was even old.

Age doesn't mean it was used much though. :)

Given the number of possible rack positions, I would say a combination warming/proofing oven. That would also account for the three temperature choices too. My mother always "warmed" the plates and serving pieces before use.

    Electric?

Yes, it's electric. Wired directly to the old knob and tube electrical system.

Ah. Are you planning to have the house rewired?

It's been rewired everywhere, they just didn't rewire the place where this oven is.

Probably hard to get to. Is that line on a NEW circuit breaker now?

Well I'm not an electric guru, so I don't know for sure. I know that the lights in there work and they are new wired. There isn't anything on that wall on either side that is electric so they probably just cut it and didn't rewire that wall.

    Hi,
I would have loved the electric warmer. We had a solid oak box about the size of a desk. It was 3' high. You lifted the lid and there were five slat shelves which were loose and movable. At the base there was a small door flap through which you would place a pan of hot coals to warm the cabinet. It was used almost daily since my Gram would raise at 4AM and make several loaves of bread. She then loaded the cabinet and 6AM she would start baking. I would awaken at 5AM and go do my chores. Mostly gathering the eggs and milking the cow and feed the chickens and rabbits. Go back into the house and have hot bread and coffee before dashing off to school. God I miss the smell of her fresh bread. I have tried to make it many times but her recipe consisted of china cup and coffee cup amounts and a pinch or a handful of this and that. It was good but there was no comparison to hers.
