It's a Catalan name. The company was based in Valencia.

It's a name that is both French and Spanish. It's a place in the Auvergne, which southern France, not far from the Spanish border. It's also found as a surname in both countries, but most often in Spain - I think it comes from the Langue D'Oc language, which has similarities to Catalan.

PS: Valencia isn't part of Catalunya, it's a separate autonomia. Their version of Catalan is somewhat different, as is Mallorquin. And then, there's the odd versions of Catalan which get spoken on Sardinia and in other Med places.

    Bona nit a tots. ;)

You must have mis-read my post. I didn't write Valencia was in Catalonia; I wrote that Saugres was a name to be found in Catalonia, with the implication that it was neither Spanish or Portuguese in origin.
