Christmasjoy - your story reminded me of a passage from one of my favorite books of all time - Will Cuppy's "Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody" on the subject of early Egypt:
It seems, though, that Hetepheres II, one of Khufu's daughters, was a blonde, perhaps the first of actual record. She is shown with bright yellow hair, striped horizontally with red, in a wall painting in the tomb of Meresankh III, and certain scholars draw the conclusion that she must therefore have had a mother with the same coloring – probably a foreigner, since all the Egyptian women were brunettes.I am afraid those are the only facts available at present.

If you want to make trouble, of course, you can say the picture does not prove either that Hetepheres II's hair was like that in real life or that her mother was a blonde who was buried in G I-b. It does prove, rather neatly, that the artist who decorated the tomb of Meresankh III had some red and yellow paint. ;)
    Cheers

Love that, especially the last bit about "some red and yellow paint".
We often try to read too much into things, and interpret it with what we know, which may not be enough to understand what something actually is.

At the time that I painted my masterpiece I never once gave thought to hair colour .. I only wanted her to be blonde LOL.
Back in those days one never crossed the teacher but I didn't want to change my painting .. He stared at me and moved on :). That is very interesting information that you posted.. I enjoyed reading it .. Thank You .. Joy. :):):)

My aunt lived in Meredith NH and collected Annalee dolls. This is not Annalee. It does look more European to me.

    She is so sweetly angelic!

That face is very reminiscent of Lenci - although I agree it is NOT a Lenci. There was at least a few Lenci "look alikes" but the bodies were chinzier. Most of those companies did seem to still have cotton bodies (but not stockinette fabric). I don't know if this IS by one of those companies. It could indeed be just a single artisan piece.

    Happy Thanksgiving! Leslie

I'm sorry I dropped out at the end of this thread 3 years ago! How rude of me!

Thanks for all the help I received. I came across these dolls the other day while I was looking for something else - I'll try to remember where they are so we can revisit this - if anyone is so inclined. :)

As we know, clutteredcloset doesn't visit here any more, or not often. And blooey has also not been here since 2021. But there are still a few of us here, and I'm interested in seeing any updates.
