My boss bought this desk 20 years ago. From the style it looks like a French King Louis XV(?) writing desk. There is a name under the desk (see picture)which I can't quite make out. Google guessing was not much help. I would greatly appreciate any information on the desk.

You might call it Hollywood Regency. It is a (mid?)20th C reproduction, probably quite expensive when new. The name would be readable if the picture was clearer, but it's a mixture of flash burn and darkness. It is just a matter of knowing the style of the lettering which is a bit art nouveau inspired.

The nouveau riche of an earlier era would have loved it, nowadays they seem to buy pastel painted industrial work benches instead.

After inverting the colors of the name pic, to me it looks like a "S" suoerimposed on a large "T" and followed with the letters A R G then 2 letters I can't make out and ending with E S.

    T. Sarg??es or S. Targ??es

I "think" the name is "Sorguiss" ??????????? The second "S" is missing the lower part of the "S" -- I think you can see the difference in color in the wood where the "lower part of that "S" would have been.

"Sorguiss" ( but sometimes spelled with one "s" at the end) appears to be a somewhat common name in the (upper?) mid-west of the USA.

Is it possible that the desk was made in the USA?

Well done with the photoshop, the first part is without doubt Sarg, Sarguss could the the name, the initial I read as an I.

I am pretty sure it is US made.

    That's an A and an E, so it's J. Sarguies I think.

Could indeed be a J now that I come to think about the leftmost curlicule as the foot.

You nailed it!!! Just before coming back to this thread, I looked at the pic again stretching it this way and that. I finally could see that left pointing "leg" on the back letter. The slight chance of it being a "J" flitted across the grey matter but didn't stick. On to the thread to see you solved the mystery with the J!!

Here's another Louis XV table or the same one. It didn't sell.

Here's a long, extending dining table by Sargues that sold for ****$18,000+****.

I can't see that style of nameplate before 1900. I think the attribution of the table above to mid 19th C is just a guess.

I agree. I think we are talking 20th century on these.

Edit: I see the Christies people agree.

I'm seeing 1950s Gaudy, but it would look good in the right room.

Not much on the internet in Spain about Sargues but this fellow started as an apprentice with the company in 1973.

Given a number of recently auctioned pieces are stamped "Control de calidad" or "Quality Control," I would agree with modern-ish.

    Pair of salon tables:

Here's that same table located in Atlanta. They say it sold for $1,800.

On the following site that Atlanta table sold for over $3,000. Hmmmmm, that table must be out of breath running around the net!

I can't find a think about this J. Sargues furniture company other then they may be a Spanish company.

With that name I'd be wondering about it being Portuguese. Spanish names often end in a Z while the same name or close in Portuguese ends in an S.
