The clunk test does work, that’s how I check at sales where they would frown at someone with a Q-tip and Simichrome

The weight test is also good at a sale. After a while you can just tell if something is too light to be Bakelite.

I never can get the smell also so I don’t bother with that test.

 

No problem, Marie, I wasn't expecting them to be, celluloid is fine. That is why I was a bit apprehensive about using chemicals.
I am glad you approve of the clunk test, I could really hear a difference. And yes, they really felt too light to be bakelite.

 

Oh yes, the "clunk test" it doesn't have the stature of the taste test yet.......

It kind of IS VooDoo! A black art at least. A piece of jewelry can be made out of multiple elements. Testing one can compromise or slowly destroy another.

I suggested the salt water/float test for amber beads recently. @Ownedbybear pointed out it might damage the thread.

Is it real, or fake? If fake, is it a contemporary fake or one of many antique simulations?

I can imagine that would work. But I don't mind cloudy amber.
I have been buying mostly Art Deco period Baltic amber lately, they loved opaque butterscotch amber in those days. So no need for kerosene, I will leave it nice and 'murky'.

Galalith can be used for some fairly convincing faux amber - might just be my sensitive nose, but it always smells slightly putrid to me...
