Thank you, Greg and Bev for the explanations. This "old broad" didn't see any of the Spiderman movies either. Great work by your Historical Society, Bev. When the movie reaches my little corner of the world, We will make a concerted effort to see it. Gee, I was still in MA in 1952 and don't remember that maritime event. Then again I was only 10. The magnitude of it didn't register on me at that age.

Just noticed I wrote "...in the throws of sinking?" Instead of throws, I should have spelled "throes."

Well, if you're thrown into the water, you might sink. :p

I've been reading reviews of the movie and some admit that the slow parts are really slow, but the dramatic parts make up for it. My husband said the engine room of the tanker is spot on and the waves crossing the bar in Chatham we know from our boating friends is also accurate. Disney didn't have to exaggerate.

Bev, saw the movie this afternoon! My, another storm thriller!! It held my attention through out. Loved seeing the few scenes of Chatham, wished there had been more. I do recommend the movie, right up there with The Perfect Storm. Must admit I didn't fully understand all the mechanical stuff and such that went on to keep the 1/2 freighter afloat and to the shoal. The hero of the freighter was Ben Affleck's brother. I like his acting better then Ben's.

Many in this area of the world (mid-south) think all of New England, well maybe just CT, RI, MA and ME, are made up of seacoast towns like Gloucester, Plymouth, now Chatham, etc. They think I must have grown up in such settings. I tell them I was from the interior, the mid-south edge, of MA on the CT line, not near the coast. I did spend several summers on the Cape.

That isn't Spider Man. It's Martin Shkreli. NO KIDDING. Google him.

Bev. I like your new avatar. Had no idea it was that particular boat. Wonderful conservation work.

Now, for a question I'm sure you can answer. What was the name of the water front restaurant, opera house in No. Chatham replaced by the "new" condos?

I almost can't imaging why they didn't founder coming in with the survivors, that loaded down!!!!! Someone up High was watching over them!!!!!:smug::)
They also used my brother's black '46 Ford he'd restored and sold, somewhere in the movie!!!!! Cool!!!

TOG - you must mean the Christopher Ryder House.

Took my grandson to see the movie yesterday. He's only 9 and was a little bit bored, but he'll be glad he saw it. It would have been hard for them to do more filming in Chatham since Shore Road is now elbow to elbow McMansions. The Chatham Bars Inn has bought up almost every house they could and turned them into $2500 a night rentals.

Funny. I lived in Chatham and couldn't afford to go there. Then I moved to Brewster and felt like it was a tourist trap. Then I moved to Orleans and it had been turned into condos. Fate.

    Thanks again.

I started going to the Cape every year for at least a weekend. Usually open at Memorial Day and Close Labor Day. Quit Hyannis area (took an hour to get from one end of Main St.to the other) and started staying at Blue Dolphin Inn in Chatham. Got to know them so well I could call July 3rd and they promised a room on the 4th.

No I couldn't afford it either, but in my business there were times when I either took off for a few days or they would take me away in a straight jacket. So it was cheaper to take a quick vacation than paying a doctor - and an attorney.

When the kids came along we'd take them down for a week or two. Always rented a house in Eastham. Nice central location.

Christopher Ryder was the big treat a couple of times a year. Good food. Then move to the Opera House and watch the show. Surprised when we drove by and they were having a tag sale. CLOSING. We stopped in, got some of their pewter under-plates, two Opera House chairs and some miscellaneous decorative pieces.

Haven't been there since 05 and miss it.

So, if you're in Orleans, stop by. I can't sing, but I'll make lunch. ;)

I might just do that, if I can.

What do you mean, if in Orleans? I've stayed in Falmouth area a few times, but nowhere near the same. BUT how the heck do you get anywhere without going through Orleans? :playful:

BTW, any at all antique shops left between Orleans and Prov? I think there was one left last time I was there. Some good ones along 6A. Still there?

We were just in Harwich last week and girlfriend and I ate at Land Ho for lunch on Wed.....could not believe (but was delighted!!!) that it looked like things had not changed since my parents went back to buy a home in the late eighties!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!! And the food was still just as GREAT!!!!!

Well, gee, I live about a mile from the Ho. You should have told me. It never changes. John Murphy, Jr. has taken over and he's smart enough to maintain the place just as his father did for decades. You guys. Next time I'll be happy to join you!

As far as Antique stores, a lot of them have gone under. The Cape is changing. We have more cutesy home decorating places now. Since Steve Tyng closed Pleasant Bay Antiques last year, Orleans hasn't got a single shop. My favorite is Kahn Fine Antiques in Chatham.

Thanks, Bev. Actually haven't hit Chatham at all the last 20 times I was there. Not a drive through. Just a guess, but "Fine Antiques" aren't always my favorites. :grumpy: We have some down here that start at $5,000.00 and only go up from there. Beyond my means. :bucktooth:

Was Tyng's that little shop on the west side of 6. Or do I mean something like a ranch house on ocean side?

The antique shops in Brewster, Dennis and, I think Yarmouth. On both sides of the street. Some big two stories on the south side. I just about always walked out with at least 2 or 3 finds.

Tyng's was on Rt 28 going into Chatham. There were several on 6A in Brewster. There are still a few. I just don't go out antiquing any more. The Historical Society Antique Show is going to be June 18th this year. At least 40 dealers from the Cape Cod Antique Dealer's Association. Good stuff and great bargains! It's at the Middle School on Rt 28 this year. Maybe I'll see some of you there. I'll be volunteering.
