I recently moved into my new home and the only thing left in the house was this fireplace on the picture attached. People are shocked that iv still got it because it looks of value. from what I can see it is possibly marble and it is very heavy. The design on it is beautiful. The person who lived here before me was an Italian guy and he was a hoarder. the house was apparently packed with really old stuff. Anyways I'm wondering if anybody can tell me anything about it just by looking at the picture.
    Thank you. received_1580035348888102.jpeg

    Probably marble but alabaster maybe?

It is in a neo-classical style and could have been made most any time. The scale of it makes me think late 19th to any time in the 20th century. If marble, it could very well be Italian.

It looks like a modern reproduction that are still on sale today in the UK. (B&Q)
Most fire surrounds are made from reconstituted marble eg: chippings and powder bonded then polished.
Real marble is cold to the touch and typically around 7 degrees cooler than the ambient room temperature.

This very well could be. Can't tell this from a photo. My comments were based on the assumption that it is real marble.

Hummm...the slab on the floor is white marble.....I know folks repurpose the fireplace mantles ......but I have to wonder.......just from the photo.....if this isn't a real fireplace that's been covered up...?

Yeah the slab on the floor is white marble. What do you mean by it's a real fireplace covered up?

When you said alabaster I started doing some research and I'm not sure but it could possibly be Egyptian Alabaster. Just taking a wild guess, I aint no expert haha!

This really looks like faux marble (cultured marble) in the new pictures. A look at the back side should make this apparent.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I tend to agree about there maybe being a fireplace behind the wall......how old is the "house"????......chimney on roof???? If you knock on the 'panel' IN the fireplace center does it sound like wood????
