    Hi All

Bought this interesting decanter / bottle last week it measures 13 inches high with the stopper. It depicts Gladstone and so probably dates to around 1880. I would appreciate any thoughts members may have as to origin and maker.

    Many thanks

    Ray

Nice I would think probably a commemorative. What does the bottom look like.

    Hi

I agree probably to commemorate a term as prime minister or possibly on his death. I have included an image of the base pontil.
    Regards

If it's Gladstone, it's English. The stopper does not look original to the bottle, though.

British, not English, strictly. ;) I suspect it held something.

Some day one of you cousins over the pond will have to explain the difference between English & British. I think someone did a long while back.

Ah now. ;) The UN state is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. There are four consituent countries or nations: England, Wales and Scotland, plus Ulster/Northern Ireland, which is often referred to as a province. Wales and Scotland have their own parliaments, although the Welsh one is called an Assembley, and Ulster - Northern Ireland - has it's Executive. The state parliament is in London and has powers over the whole kingdom, but a lot of law is devolved these days.

I am a citizen of Great Britain, but I'd not call myself English, particularly. Very little of my ancestry is.

Gladstone being a parliamentarian, maybe it originally held natural gas.

    I'm confused :inpain:

Last week I had to send a package to London (I'm in the US). I went to the USPS website and got an estimate on the package pulling down to UK. When I went to buy the postage online there was no UK, they had Great Britain. What is with that? How can they have one name in a pull down menu when getting a price and a different name when buying the postage! I emails and asked but, of course, I got a canned response with pretty much no useful information.

    Sorry, just wanted to vent.

So, English is more of a language designation than a person.

    Spot on, Bev.

USPS are idiots, but you knew that. ;)
