    Hi all,

I've had a look around this site before joining and the community seems nice (rare for an internet forum!).

With that in mind, i was hoping somebody could help me to identify and get a value on an oak dining table and cabinet. I think it's 1920s but can't be certain.

Many thanks in advance for any help that can be provided, and sorry it's not as interesting as some of the other items i've seen here!

Tom East, I find your table, chairs, and sideboard/buffet/cabinet interesting and attractive.

I really like the drawer pulls (knobs) on the sideboard/buffet and the decorative carving(s) on the chairs and table pedestals. ;)

Thanks for raising the confidence of my set, perhaps I was too hasty to write it off as mundane. Does 1920s seem about right? Any idea of the value on a piece like this?

Y gracias, eres muy amable, hola a ti tambien.

Haha, well I lived in Mexico for 18 months, so it should be pretty decent.

1920 or just a bit later. English or Continental Art Deco style set. Value is not high these days but I am sure someone would like the set since it is not huge and has some charm. In a retail setting here in the Midwest, I would expect to see the set priced in the $500.00 range but might need to be discounted a bit to sell. Unfortunately, if this were painted, it would probably fly out the door. I wouldn't do that to this set but there are those that would.

So, Tom - It looks like this set has been refinished - your work or the way it was when you got it?

Where are you? As Brad has mentioned, local preferences (and therefore "values") can vary greatly.

Thanks for the replies and information, it's interesting and helpful.

It may well have been touched up but since it's been in my family's hands (about 20 years).

I'm actually in the UK, north of England, so I guess about £350? Not bad considering my mum thought it was worthless and was going to give it away! Glad I stopped her, I really like this set, but have no room for it unfortunately.

With regards to painting it, I could never bring myself to do it.

I'm glad you stopped her too! Sure wish you were closer to me (halfway around the world :hilarious:.)

Not sure you can equate US values to where you are. We do have other members from the UK that could probably assist you on value. Since it is from England, it might not seem as unusual to your market as it does here.

Also don't know if the painted furniture craze is strong there as it is here. I would never paint any furniture that is in good condition but can't keep up with fixing and painting furniture in poor repair. Much to my chagrin, it has become the bread and butter of my business.

The brown furniture market is very slow, and there are a lot of similar items about. They are more or less indestructable but just not what young people buying for a first home want. And everyone else has one already.

"I really like this set, but have no room for it unfortunately"

You and many, many others. I fear it could fetch as little as £50 for the lot.

The size is a selling point for me. It's compact, yet looks as if it has extensions. Great for small apartments. I think we're going to see a resurgence of this era. This set has a lot going for it - the styling and the fact that you have matching pieces. Maybe I'm a sucker for this type of furniture. Well, yes, I do have a furniture fetish.

I assume you mean at auction? Surely it would do better than that in a retail setting.

Retailers try to avoid relatively cheap things that are large and heavy.
