Bev, there was an artist named Frances Anne Beechey Hopkins who did watercolor and gouache paintings and the era in which she painted is right. One painting of hers in particular that I saw looks like it could possibly be by the same hand as yours...

According to AskArt.com, she was also known as "FAH" in her work, and I think the signature in your painting could be FAH rather than EAH. I didn't see Ms. Hopkins signature, though, to compare.

    She also did these paintings...

Her works have sold for a very nice amount...

There's an initials signature in the lower right corner of the "Who's Afraid" watercolor in your artvalue link, Pat!

Ah, so there is, Bakers! It does seem that she usually signed her works "FAH."

And that one is straight on rather than slightly tilted like the others. Style is very similar to Bev's piece.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

OH, WOW! Pat seems to have nailed it!!!!

Edit - I find the hands and feet of the beach children similar to the mermaid's hands, in style... the kids' faces too, minus the makeup and fantasy elements of the mermaid.

Bev's piece looks to me like it may have been done as an illustration, maybe for a book, magazine, or advertising purposes. So although it's more stylized in some ways, I think the work is consistent with at least some of the Frances Anne Hopkins paintings.

Absolutely. As I was saying, I find the hands and feet of the beach children similar to the mermaid's hands, in style... the kids' faces too, minus the makeup and fantasy elements of the mermaid. Also, several of the water treatments seem similar, but not VERY similar, but as you say, Pat, the fantasy style in the mermaid illustration accounts for that. I am so excited for Bevster!

I just messaged her, since she sometimes doesn't come here for a while in between posts. She should drop by some time soon...

If I hadn't been so locked into the first initial E I might have stumbled onto this. The initials are slightly different, but enough so that it may well be her. She died in 1918 and this was painted in 1911. I'm excited for my son who fell in love with it.

We had a busy morning and then went shopping and now I'm making Portuguese Kale Soup. Thanks to a message while I was checking FB, I checked in here. I can tell you, though, that son won't be selling it. He really likes it. I trained my kids to appreciate antiques at an early age. At least I did one thing right!

This was the cover picture on the Boston Post Magazine for Sep. 18, 1910. Have not found artist, yet, but image was on Pinterest.

We think the illustrator was Alice Beard, a student of Howard Pyle. In that case, ours is a very nice copy done a few months later maybe by a local artist. That's why we couldn't find him/her online.

Now that my son has looked at vintage illustrations with me, I think he's hooked. He had me bookmark some sites. I, too, love that era. Not that we have any wall space left.
