Duh, I hadn't even looked at the image, just the letters/words. :hilarious:

This photo has green tint added to trees and grass shown within it but is otherwise black and white. The photo measures 4 5/8” by 6 3/8” (1/8” white border included). Title (processed into the photo) is "The Tay Bridge and Hills of Fife from Balgay Hill, Dundee.

Normally, I would take the photo out of the frame to get a better, squarer, glare-free image, but in this case a gift inscription on the back dates it to 1950 and I don't want to compromise that.

I found a postcard online, not the same photo but certainly taken from the same vantage

MOS, in case you don't already know this, that's about the size of a "continental postcard," plus RPPCs (real photo postcards) often have that type of writing in white. So I wonder if it's actually an RPPC that was framed?

I absolutely love this place (especially this thread)... and the people who 'live' here too :)

If it weren't for Ownedbybear posting that gorgeous, delicious ice bucket, I would never have even bothered to pick up this wine chiller to look underneath .... but lo and behold! it had a Christofle stamp! Not nearly as old or as stylish as 'bear's but .... I'll take it
Warning: it's filthy with tarnish so consider this a "before" picture ;)

"Torsade" - measures about 7¾" high by nearly 7" across
    (circa 1980's?)

    Thanks Ownedbybear!!!! :)

I didn't know that. The paper looks thin for a post card but, without taking it out of the frame, I can't be certain. I wouldn't be particularly surprised or disappointed. I'm happy it doesn't have a dot matrix on magnification. It could be an RPPC production technique. I doubt it's some one's one-off snap, if for no other reason than because the caption is so neat and typeset. The caption on this and on the other PC is the same in terms of content and type, but the location and configuration are different, which I doubt would be difficult to accomplish. It wouldn't surprise me if both pictures were taken by the same person, maybe even on the same day, and for the same souvenir purpose.

There's a Toronto framer's stamp on back with, written above it in pencil, the inscription "compliments of". I can't quite figure that out.

If I am not mistaken (or it may just be something I have seen around this section of the US), many years ago even if services were paid for (e.g. framing of an item or other "service") the merchant would sometimes use "compliments of (name of shop/framer)" . . . but like I said I remember that from years ago and the "compliments of" was part of the "printed" label. It may have been just a "figure of speech" so to speak. ;)

RPPCs are actual photographs, not repro prints, so there are no dots. The paper used for postcards aren't always the same weight.

It's a nice composition and looks great framed. :)

Too bad the picture of Scotland didn't come with the best Scots export? And no I don't mean shortbread.

I trust everyone looking at the Tay Bridge card is aware of this work from Scotland's least competent poet.

    http://www.mcgonagall-online.org.uk/gems/the-tay-bridge-disaster

"Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv’ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time."

There is a fair bit more but that's the flavour of it.

I have ony just re-read the whole thing, but the last few lines are priceless.

"I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed."

The miracle of McGonagall is that you couldn't make it up, but he somehow did.
