Featured Silver bracelet stamp ID

Please does anyone's recognise this stamp?.
I bought this as white metal but it tests as silver.
The stamp says S&S Std. I've found a couple online with the same stamp that sellers seem to think are Sterling but no indication of origin or what the stamp stands for.

Nice "aesthetic period?" design - aka Japonisme. Last quarter 19th C would be the prime period, but I know nothing about the mark so I can't use that as an indication of age. Probably plated?

 

Could be plated. It has a slight matt sheen to it which makes me suspicious. Unless that stamp can be pinned down I can't be sure.
I've always got a negative acid test on anything plated I've tested before such as cutlery etc unless the silver is quite thick?
Do you have to do the same as gold to be absolutely sure and file it? ( no I'm not going to!)
Just seen you think last 1/4 19th century, and I was thinking 50s!. I'm way off as usual!

 

First, I have never tested silver or gold myself, so I can't comment on those questions (other than to say - don't file it down!!)

My estimate of age has to do with the prime period of popularity for the design. But I also think that it just generally looks older that your '50s thought - way older!

No, don't worry, I don't file anything, I'd rather not know than damage it.

 

The decoration. The fan the bird the fern fronds, etc. The bracelet itself reminds me of napkin rings from that same period - although they don't have the split and clasp obviously.

The matt sheen is the wanted finish on these aesthetic period pieces, nothing related to plated or not It has silver feeling to me.

I beleive that's an abbreviation that was used late 19th/early 20th of Std for Standard. It meant a sterling silver content, from memory. Australian. Stokes and Sons. I had a medal or something like.

 

Polish it. Is it actually a matt finish? or just tarnish?
Any dings or wear will show and give you a better idea if it is plated or not.

Personally, even though it has a Japonica theme and looks somewhat aesthetic period.
If is it is a satin finish, I'm going to say 1960s silver plate.
If is polishes to a high gleam, then possibly sterling and older.

 

Silvercollection has added an Australia section and Stokes & Son are listed, but unfortunately he does not show a mark of theirs with "Std" only STG for sterling.

With that aesthetic design, doesn't it HAVE to be 19thc.?

Don't harsh polish yours it will ruin the finish

 

I've polished it with a sunshine cloth and the exterior 'glows' but maintains its slightly satin look. The interior really shines though. I've looked through a loupe and can't see any base showing through even on the clasp. There is only one tiny tiny ding and again no base showing.

 

It is 19th century - will have to dig around a bit, but seem to recall that even though the pieces are usually described in sales descriptions as 'sterling', they're nice quality English electroplate, want to say the mark belonged to silver manufacturer Sanford & Shepard...

I saw this on my online meandering but discounted it as the mark was different. Maybe I need to pursue it further.

Having googled Aesthetic silver bracelet I now see what you all mean. It's very distinctive of that style.
Short of damaging it, which I'm not prepared to do, I'll keep an eye out for other ones that may give us a clue as to if silver or plate.
