hey guys, just wanted to share a piece that is big up on my wish list :D
this is known as a silver pyramid. its a piece of glass that glass makers in scandinavia and nothern germany in the 19th century, would make in their after hours, or possibly at home. since it is not an official production piece of any glassworks, there are no real records of how many there are, but making glass pieces after hours were common and is known here as ''fusk'' (which actually means fraud litterally). these are very desireable among glass collectors, especially in nothern europe, aaaaand ;) this specific one is comming up for auction in 2 days :D so i am excited~ i hope i can find a bit of room in my budget to try and purchase this~

British glass makers made 'end of the day' objects out of whatever coloured glass was left over.

yeah i think that was pretty common throughout :) but this kinda thing is sorte iconic for the north german glass makers, who brought it to denmark, and even norway and sweden i believe~ its definately more interesting than the usual end-of-the-day paper weight in my opinion :D

Never seen anything like it here in England. Is that air trapped inside?

i believe its sand, its usually pale silvery white, hence the name silver pyramid, but im excited to see this and maybe even buy it, the color scheme inside makes it more interesting~

Lovely. The word here would be frigger - a glass blower making something basically to sell himself.

Really? I've always thought that word meant something else entirely ... and if used in conjunction with this item ?!? Well .....:jawdrop:

The meaning you refer to is rather archaic.

Still in use here. The end of day pieces were common wherever you had glass workers. The Americans made things too, and some bits from the 19th century glass works are worth a pretty penny ... when you can find them. I haven't seen anything like that before, but now we have one more thing to look for.

Here in southern New Jersey (U.S.), an 18th./19th. cent. glass making center, this was called a whimsey. As a matter of fact similar items, called Devils Fire weights were known to be made around Millville N.J. a thriving glass works town circa 1870.
