I have never collected jewelry. Heck I can't keep track of a pair of earrings. :) That being said, a friend asked me to sell this bracelet for her in my online store and to price it at what I think it is worth. It is 14K and has 17 gold charms on it. Weighs 16.9 grams. Easy enough to check the price of gold but does this have a higher value because it is antique?

How do you know that it's an actual antique?

u have to check each charm for a purity mark.
the bracelet is at best...just a charm holder..
the only thread thru the charms...is maybe...household.

A lot of folks sell single charms....but I highly doubt your friend is willing to wait that long for the whole...to be sold....
so... make sure it's all 14K....get the melt weight for the amount of grams....& tack on 20%......
if it doesn't move...u can always lower the price...till it does !

It was her great grandmothers bracelet I guess. Passed on to her when her mom died. That is all the info I have on it.

I think you mean vintage as the bracelet appears to be less than 100 years old. (If I had to make an educated guess, I would think it dates to the 1950s which was a period when charm bracelets were particularly popular.) You might want to do an eBay Sold listings search to see if gold charm bracelets of no great import sell for much beyond scrap value. Individual charms can have value. I personally don't see anything terribly special there but could be wrong. The ones likely to do so are those that are articulated (i.e. have moving parts.)

And... how sad! Selling her great-grandmother's bracelet! As was the custom, it likely was started for her by a parent or relative when she was a little girl.

Thanks for this! I talked her out of taking it so a local (crooked) silver and gold dealer and I said I would help her. Sometimes I get in over my head. She mentioned wanting to get $400. Sounds like I can maybe get that. I will check the charms on Worthpoint. The little Yale padlock is cool and unique. Thanks for your help!!

Great information. Yes it is sad. But I guess they need the money. :-( When I die my family is going to have to go through chests full of sentimentals. Our parents and grandparents drivers licenses, report cards, drawings, bibles, etc. I can't get rid of any of it. It's a sickness. Thanks for the reply

Not a sickness. A great respect for family heritage.

I sold one of my Mother's (no one to pass it on to) charm bracelets - all 14 and 18k gold. Thought it would go higher but sold for about 10% above melt. Have had more success with her silver charm bracelets.

You have a five dollar bracelet and 17 five dollar charms. Take the $400 in gold value.

Several years ago, I purchased a charm bracelet at a yard sale. It turned out to be 14K. The single charms sold for more money on ebay so I opted to listed each charm individually. It took a long time to sell all of the charms. If I remember correctly, over a year. I did make more money but after deducting fees, shipping supplies and time, if I had to do it over again, I would sell it as a bracelet. If she needs the money now, sell it as a complete bracelet or scrap it.

Here is a completed auction on ebay that sold for $375 and it weighed 16 grams.
    The scrap value was $446.

When I checked the scrap value online, 16.9 grams came out to $472. If you have a refiner in your area and you can skip the middle man, you would get more than bringing it to a jeweler that buys gold for scrap.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

I think the charms on this bracelet are better (and older) than most. I would take some time researching it. On eBay sold listings, at the very least.

I know I'm the odd duck, but I see nothing sad about family selling stuff that no longer has sentimental value.

If it brings the family no joy, it serves no purpose and should find a new home. Only sad when selling still treasured items in order to eat or pay the mortgage.

Sadder still to starve or be homeless, though.

That's a good point, Jivvy (re sentimental value.)

    After reading MillCove's reply.

If you are already a seller on ebay (I would not start selling on ebay today), I would take all the charms and list individually, at least twice. Those that don't sell then sell for scrap.

The holidays are almost here and people have started their Christmas shopping early this year.

I would do that too........... but like I said...
.but I highly doubt your friend is willing to wait that long for the whole...to be sold....

even though I agree with Jivvy who said........
I think the charms on this bracelet are better (and older) than most

& if so.....selling the whole thing togetheris not a bad idea....letting the buyer parcel out the charms at a higher val;ue....albeit ...slower...........

Thank you everyone for your replies. I have shared them with my friend. We are going to research the little charms for a bit and figure the best way. She is sure that a few of these are quite old so we are going to make a project out of it. As always, you are all very helpful.
