Looking to ID wooden masks

I was given some masks and have no interest in keeping them. Maybe someone here would have an idea of their value or where these came from originally?

Could you tell how old they are or if they’re worth anything?

 

Not sure of the age, not new imho. Yes they are worth something - authentic masks like these are always saleable, don't know how much though - check comparables on eBay maybe?

Someone with more experience with Balinese masks will be along - I've never owned one so nothing to go on.

You might consider adding pictures of the backs - that sometimes helps with figuring out the age.

Your masks are all from Bali. The condition is not great, they were either used or are old, rather neglected souvenirs. Could we see the backs please?

#1 is Rangda, the demon queen. It is missing some details. This is a very popular mask with tourists. I live in the Netherlands, and Rangda masks are found in many Dutch homes.
#2 not sure, could portray one of the relatives of demon king Ravana from the Hindu epic Ramayana.
#3 looks like a generic mask. Could be used whenever needed, for a number of minor characters.
#4 a Barong mask missing some details. Barong is the king of the nature spirits. He can take on any spirit animal form, but his favourite is the lion, which this mask portrays.

#1 and 4 are characters from the same dance, the Barong dance. It symbolizes the eternal struggle for balance between good (Barong) and evil (Rangda).

 

The base paint of Balinese masks and other painted carvings is generally a dull matt red. Gold painted details of crowns and other details become dull and ochre-like over time. Maybe that is what you mean?
