Anyone know red glass? (Bohemian, Salviati...)

Happy new year all, wondered if you could give me thoughts on something and unfortunately I don't have photos.

A few days ago I was in a consignment store and they were just putting out a collection of delicate red glass. It was paper thin, so seemed to have some age, and was painted with scenes all around, I would say in the style of some Salviati pieces I've seen online, but I'm not an expert.

It was not totally inexpensive (around $25 per four pieces) and I passed on all of it as I wasn't quite sure if resale would be worth it and it just seemed so fragile and kind of a hassle to ship. It was a somewhat large collection, 4 sherbets, 4 champagnes, 4 aperitif glasses, dessert plates, salad plates, trying to recall, maybe $125 if I was to purchase all of it. Of course it might not still be there, but it was sort of in a corner under a book shelf, so maybe. I just got thinking as I was looking something else up tonight, and saw a few Salviati pieces that looked similar -- similar style in any case.

On the off chance this was Moser or something at that level, would one expect to see such a full set? Or would that suggest it was something else?

The last time I had glass this thin and delicate (one of the main features here) it was Czech.

I know kind of vague...and no photos. Thoughts appreciated. The store is a little out of the way, but I could swing by and see if it was still there...

    Thanks.

Hi Lucille - Was it scenes of people and/or places, or more of a geometric pattern? To me it sounds like Italian glass, quite possibly Murano. Given the pieces you list it sounds like a dessert set to me. If you do decide to go back ask the people at the counter if they could call the dealer for you. See if they would offer a discount if you buy the whole set at once. I do hate to see a set broken up!

    Thank you Cx and Don.

Thanks for the link. Helpful. I don't think the set at the consignment store is quite as fine as the one in the link.

Don, it was people, not geometric, although had little embellishments, too. I remember thinking, wow, this is probably a good deal, but I don't want to mess with all this fragile glass...

I was pretty tired that day, I might have more energy for it tomorrow if I decide to check back and it is still there. Good idea to inquire about purchasing the entire set for a slight discount if I decide to go for it. They had it priced separately.

Not exact, there were more figures in scenes painted in the consignment store set, but it was a bit along these lines:

As hard as it is to swallow, good quality glass, even in sets, is a very hard sale these days. You are probably wise to pass by anything you can not absolutely identify and have a market for unless it is dirt cheap. I regularly pass by a lot of glass at $ .50 per piece unless there is a complete set or I know it is exceptional. Even then, I have to think it has some appeal to modern buyers. Old fashioned glassware has few buyers these days. You would not believe all the 100++ year old glass I pass by at 50 cents or less per piece.

If you do go to get it bring lots of soft packing stuff and bins or stout boxes. :)

Brad, this was exactly my thought. Quality, but not easily resold due to changing tides in the business. However... last night was looking up something completely different online and just by chance ran into a few similar pieces to the consignment store ones selling and started second guessing. I'm also mindful that a few things like this might sell in anticipation of Christmas (but not at other times of the year) being just so red and over the top.

Might swing by due to having a bit more comparables in my head just to take one last look, if I do packing materials would be a good idea (King).

If by any chance I do wind up getting them, will post.

I have a camera on my phone, I actually decided not to get these (for reasons similar to Brad's thought process) so no need to take a photo. (But a good tip, Fenton. Thanks.)

It was only after I got home a few day later, looking up some different Italian glass, I just happened to hit an auction that looked similar to the pieces which started all of this.

For all I know the pieces aren't there any more, plus who knows might be just as well.
