I have two pieces. One is a 7" wide-mouth vase that seems self-explanatory.

But (to begin with) I'm not sure what to call the other. It's a lidded jar (dresser?) measuring 4 1/2" diameter x 3" deep.

2nd question concerns condition. There's a little white spot in the blue part, below her neckline. But it's perfectly smooth, and seems consistent with the rather primitive style of this artist. So I'm thinking it's not a flaw. Here it is straight on.

And finally, the maker marks. The vase seems self-evident (though I'm unsure who/what Viertri is).

But on the "jar," there's something at top that looks like "GP." And the number 164 (which I took above to be the item #) is followed by a slash and another digit. I'm not sure what it is: a 9?

As always, grateful for your input!

The white spot is just a loss of glaze...no big deal. I would consider that a firing flaw. It's in good shape! The other numbers/initials are probably unimportant; I wouldn't worry about them, personally.

    Hi,
I hope Walter sees this. His knowledge of Italian pottery is just unbelieveable.

    Thank you.

I am just at a loss as to what to call this.

With those dimensions, I think it is simple a box. Bit large for trinket box, but that could be it, too, I guess.

It's De Simone not Desimone and Vietri is just a retailer. The vase withe De Simone in the artwork is likely a Giovanni design, the Vietri is likely a Susanna design.

Unless you know without question that the piece is Giovanni's just list them as De Simone as you will avoid problems with collectors that only want Giovanni's work. Agree that the spot is just a glaze issue and meaningless (at least to me as someone who has the pottery all over my kitchen) and I too would call the covered piece a box. Definitely don't state the "urban legend" Picasso connection. It isn't true although often stated that he was Picasso's student.

You're very welcome. My parents gave me my first piece in the late 60s (sadly long since broken and gone) and I've been picking up pieces ever since when I find them at a price I can relate to but am always amazed at the misinformation posted in some of the listings. I take everything with a "grain" but I know some get really crazy over misattributions.

I've seen plenty of that myself. It's pretty amazing what some sellers call Baccarat, for example.

As a seller with no real specialty (I sell what clients give to me), I rely heavily on forums like this excellent one, to avoid misleading buyers.

Your help here I consider to be priceless. Invaluable! Thanks again for steering me straight.

And what do you think? I decided to start the price very low, at $.99. I've enjoyed a lot of success doing that, with carefully selected items.

PS. I'd love to see your kitchen. It must be brilliant and most enjoyable!

You're asking the wrong one LOL as I don't sell and I love $.99 auctions but as a rule I don't think they're in a seller's best interest in this day and age. On the other hand, De Simone has a strong following and you've got nice pieces so you'll probably do just fine but see what others here think. I'll be watching-there's always room in my kitchen for more!

LOL My kitchen is a kick-it's definitely "Death By Desimone, Parrucca, Kosta Boda Tulipa and pre-50's Mexican pottery". Friends have commented that they're surprised that I've always had all white walls and usually wear all black but it's because I live surrounded by endless bright color in my house.

Do point out that the glaze miss is neither a chip nor camera flash as although it wouldn't stop me I imagine some collectors are very picky.

Ah, but white is the perfect color to display such treasures. My walls are pure white, and happily covered with an extensive art collection.

Your kitchen sounds like a very pleasurable place to spend lots of time. (My own kitchen in a recently built house according to a decades-old dream is one third of a great room—measuring 20 x 30. The remaining two thirds is part dining and part "living.")
