Can anyone identify the N mark at the bottom of this teapot? It looks handpainted, possibly a hobbyist piece. 1846 was painted on the bottom. Just wondering if it is worth much or not.

Hi PaulaJedi - with that glaze I would say Italian. The N mark is meant to suggest capodimonte. The 1846 is most likely a shape or decorator number. These items don't tend to have a great deal of value and the damage to the glaze will hurt the value further.

Ok, I'm seeing them range from $15-$35. Will check the local market. Thanks for the info. I should eventually make a book of marks that I learn. :)

There are some reference books on marks that you can pick up fairly cheaply (Under $10) on the second ary market. My favorites are Godden's Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain marks, Lehner's Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain & Clay, and Kovel's New Dictionary of Marks: Pottery and Porcelain, 1850 to the Present. Some great sites for marks too. My favorite site by far is porcelainmarksandmore.com - if you need to find a Germany, Bavaria mark that is the place to go.

Italian, 1960s or later and yes, it's the fake Capodimonte mark. That rose is typical.

The number looks like 4846 or 4896 to me.

No. that's a European 1 with a rather large serif. A seven is much the same with a cross-bar.

The shape is a coffee pot.
