But it's the real Civil War, between the King and Parliament, and the history was published in 1683. It is a more or less narrative account covering the period from the coronation of Charles I to the restoration of Charles II. I really have no idea why the Pictures are duplicated

The writer was a high ranking official who kept his head down and kept his head, but was privy to affairs of state and parliament. I fished it out of the shed to consider selling it but started to read it and it is full of dead pan accounts of fiascos such as this where an attempt on a 'Great Booty' at Cadiz resulted in a rout when the English all got roaring drunk (more or less what happens today)

Oh, and the plague was raging.

With some sunny weather a chair on the lawn is a good place to read this rather large book, it is too big for bedtime reading.

Too funny! "Abused themselves" has a different meaning today than it did in 1682 (which, if I read the Roman numerals correctly, is the publication date). ;) Cool book!

A large variety of the letter “S” in that text.

And it’s interesting that the words “Spanish”, “English”, “Cadiz”, and “London” look like inserts rather than type-set… a different font, different size, and not quite aligned.

Read a line once that read, "They failed at dawn." I thought how unfortunate, but what was meant was, of course, "They sailed at dawn."

The italic seems to be used for emphasis on important proper nouns, and in different places whole paragraphs are italicized.

I keep running into remarkable things. The annual cost of the war in the Palitinate was £700,000 a year, yet one courtier had (allegedly) corruptly obtained land grants worth £250,000 from King James, and some jobs (offices) were selling for £20,000.

It's not hard to see, even at the beginning of the reign, that things are not going to end well for Charles I.

A few days after I moved to Australia in 1998 I read an article in the Age newspaper about Prime Minister John Howard and how Civil War history was a special interest of his. I (rather naturally, I think) assumed they meant the English civil war, but noooo - it turned out he was an American Civil War buff!

The second "N" in "TRANSACTIONS" was printed upside down.
