My husband and I bought this today while out antiquing. We have searched and searched for what it could be. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Looks cobbled together from 3 other 1960's Provincial style maple wood pieces of furniture. It may not be, maybe just looks that way to me.

The metal things look maybe like cigar ashtrays? The rest looks perhaps like a record player cabinet with the record player at the bottom and record storage above? I could be way off - just a guess.

The side ashtrays appear to fit into holes craftily cut into a wooden coffee table top?

agree. most probably a marriage of some sort.
especially obscure is the Napoleonic chicken holding a baguette in its claws.

I would call it a smoking stand and may be as made. Think post-war, on in to the 50s. Top may be for magazines. Bottom may have been fitted with a removable humidor. Styling is typical of post-war "Colonial" hodge-podge furniture. The eagle was usually thrown in to take it over the top and differentiate from competitors.

Doesn't look like a marriage to me either, reminds me of some of larger, somewhat awkward looking, dual purpose Cushman Smokers from the 1920s-'30s (have seen those same, or very similar, cobalt ashtrays in quite a few Cushman Smokers). Would think for magazines too (a combination smoking/reading cabinet?) - there appears to be notches right under the top, wonder if it might have held a newspaper-rod. What is the size?

It's to small for a record player and I really don't think it is different pieces put together. The workmanship is the same throughout. But I do believe a humidor went in the bottom for sure.

My mother in law used to have an antique store and said it looked like it could be from the 30's as well. She's just never seen this piece before.

You could call it a "what-what."

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

    Welcome to Antiquers, @L.A. --

This is one of the more unusual pieces of furniture posted here lately. I don't know too much about furniture compared to others here, so instead will ask: what will you do with it? Looks like it could have lots of uses.

What does anyone make of the wood strips inside the lower section that IMHO are intended to keep something from moving around - like the turntable idea mentioned early, although may not work for other reasons. What else would fit and require stabilization away from the sides and back?

Haven't decided yet. We just thought it was different and loved it. Right now it's holding some of my late grandma's things.

We think it may have held a humidor.
