Bought this from an estate sale. You can see thru it, not totally solid color. 1 1/8" tall and 2 1/2" long.

Can you scratch it with a sharp steel point?

I am not going to scratch it. It does not look like soapstone.

My first thought seeing this was zuni white marble but I don't know. Looks like some I was looking up three or four years ago. Someone that knows zuni fetishes better than me would know for sure.

I only asked because jade can't be scratched with a steel point and it looked to me that it could possibly be nephrite.

I was thinking serpentine; that's what it generally is.

I'm with evelyb, serpentine, most likely Chinese. Sometimes called serpentine jade, but it is not jade of any kind.

Nephrite is also jade, btw. It is often called the collector's jade. Jadeite is the other type, it is more the fashion and bling jade.
Nephrite is native to China and was used for the old pieces. The Chinese only began to import jadeite from Burma during the Qing dynasty. It was valued for its vivid colours and glossy sheen.

Sometimes you'll see serpentine called "new jade" but that's marketing hype. Jade it ain't. I even had to correct an antique/jewelry store owner on that one once. She wasn't too pleased but it was the truth.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Cute-- is it a dragon, or a dolphin? Or something else?

It is a type of dragon, imo.:)

That was my first thought. Then I started wondering. Since it's a fantasy beast maybe it doesn't matter. :)
