So you have to take the cover off to acess it ? I was thinking jewelry box,but now Im wondering if its some sort of storage for something that you wouldn't get into much ? That seems a pain having to do that every time you needed something out of it. Its gorgeous none the less ! Could it be papier mache instead of laquer ?

Hiya Billy, I don't know what to call these, besides Chinese black lacquer. I could be wrong, but here is a search to get you started.
    chinese black lacquer

These are table-top size? Or for on top of a chest of drawers or sideboard? What did your Gramma keep in them? Jewelry? Silverware?

It's impossible to tell what they are because there's no photograph of the WHOLE thing. If I could see it entirely, I bet I could tell what it is.

this is small well somthing you would set on top of a desk or somthing i orginal thought as well it would be for jewerly but then had the same thought of having to take the "lid or top" off everytime (yes all the drawers are located under the top that go over it). im fairly certain it is black laquer but i have no idea what she kept in it as i havnt been to my gma's since i was real young and upon coming into my possesion it was empty. not really worried about a price allthough might be nice to know but not to interested in saleing i mean if it happens to end up be worth ALOT you never know and i know my gma would not mind as long as it went to somthing needed if she somehow came back and i still had the thing after a hardship she would say somthing like "what the hell didnt ya sell the dang jewerly box (or w.e. it is) what you going to do with gmas box..and then why i wouldnt need it as im a guy and yada yada yada haha but really wanna know the period its from and exsactly what it would have been marketed as i was thinking maybe a sewing box but ones i have seen all of one bigger drawer aside a smaller one then thought maybe just a "nick nact or vaulable" box but im not sure...

How does the smaller one (on the left) open up? The one on the right just looks like a standard small set of drawers.

In my opinion these small furniture items are typical of merchandise bought in Asian ports of call by sailors as gifts for relatives back home. I think many such items were made as souvenir merchandise rather than for domestic use. The extensive decoration is one clue. Some such items may be more highly-decorated versions of something used by consumers in the country of origin, but many may be items produced only for the tourist market.

I think SA is right. Places like Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Teintsin, Canton, etc.

The last photos posted are too way too dark. I don't need any more photos, myself, but if you are going to post photos in the future check to see that they got onough light.

Not only "way too dark," but too small. Both of the pics in reply #10 are around

    12 KB in weight-size
    320 px wide X 240 px height in dimension-size

I tried to enlarge and brighten them up. When I enlarged them they became out of focus. I can not see them well enough to even guess what they are as small dark pictures. Am including enlarged brighten pics, but still out of focus. It would have been easier for us to help if your posted pics had been brighter, larger and of a higher resolution.

    1st pic brighten & enlarged:
    Dimension-wise: 468 px wide X 359 px height
    Weight-wise: 46 KB
    chest1.jpg

    2nd pic just brightened:
    chest2.jpg

    2nd pic brightened and enlarged:
    Dimension-wise: 600 px wide X 223 px height
    Weight-wise: 30 KB
