the medical measure case is the closest construction wise, with the stepped lid

but the hole makes me think it could possibly be something else

What does the bottom look like? I have something similar with a match striker on the base. It's just a match holder and not a go-to-bed.

Late to the party, but I’m on the baccy side.

The hole in pic #8 looks very modern and unprofessional IMHO

I am in the string box camp.;)
The go-to-bed matchboxes seem to be smaller and more slender, whereas this is a plump little box, perfect for holding a ball of string. Many other string holders have the same plump size.

My first thought was string box. I've seen a couple when we had our antique store.

string box or go to bed i'd be more than happy with, just playing devils advocate, and with matches ;)

That hole is far too small for nineteenth century string.

Looks like it might be a Phosphorous Box-that'd be way cool. Early ignition device poss related to Tobacciana, could be a most excellent adventure Mate !
    PS-This keeps Us hunting !
    PSS- Great reference Cheryl.
