Bought this at a second hand store and know it is very old and possibly a faience beer stein. Do you know the country, the maker's mark IMG_5911__1740366862_56426.jpg IMG_5924__1740366892_15085.jpg IMG_5921__1740366922_54332.jpg IMG_5925__1740366968_66627.jpg or the time period? Is it a faience beer stein? It is about 10 inches tall. Thank you.

I would say that is a jug or pitcher, it has a pourer, Steins are usually straight sided with an even lip for drinking from.
Unless it was used for decanting.

Thank Davey, I wondered about that, since some others that looked very close to mine were listed as steins. Didn't know about decanting, thanks.

I don't know how strict the terminology is in the US, but the German word Stein refers to Steinzeug, stoneware.
As you said, this jug is faience, a type of pottery, so fired at a lower temperature than stoneware.
It is a charming folk piece, and an elegant shape.

Pewter flip-top lid and base would have been addressed later, probably to cover damage. So I agree originally jug, pitcher with additions.

Does anyone recognizes the mark? What country it is from maybe?

It does indeed give an idea of the age. Unfortunately not the country, the scene isn't Dutch.
My mother had some folk pottery with the same decoration in her collection, but unfortunately I can't remember where it was from.:(

The small crosses on the roofs of the houses are probably an indication of the origin, which I would guess is somewhere in Central Europe. Germany, Austria, Hungary, thereabouts.

Sorry I just look at the site you referred me to and I do not see a label.
Thank you AnyJewelry. Does Italy ring a bell for the place your mothers was from? I saw a couple of similar but not the same paintings on faience that were from Italy?

She had folk pottery from all over Europe, so it could be, but I can't say for sure.:(
Underneath the first photo of the painting are dots. Each dot is for another photo, if you click on dot #4 you'll see the label.:)

Thanks, AJ! I didn't think it was Dutch, but more likely German because of the crosses as you mentioned.

An indication of a Catholic country or region.;)
The south of the Netherlands is largely Catholic, but because for centuries public signs of Catholicism were banned, we don't traditionally have crosses on houses.

Should have been “added later” not “addressed later” (thanks autocorrect)!

And should have said “I agree it was originally an uncovered jug or pitcher before those pewter additions”. I can’t blame anyone but myself for that cryptic comment!

Not sure you saw this earlier.
