I cannot for the life of me work out how this works.

    A beautiful belt buckle.
A fabric or leather belt goes through the loops at the back, and the buckle is fastened by sliding the thin end through the slot in the wide end. The ball on the thin end prevents it from sliding out.
    Similar concept as belt bracelets.

I saw a belt with such a buckle in an ethnic jewellery auction recently, but can't remember where it was from.:sorry:

Sure looks like a buckle. And it looks like the round end of one end has, over time, resulted in a rounding to the center right of the opening in the other into which it slid?

Aha! Thank you ladies, I had one piece the wrong way round. ;)

Debora, now you've pointed that out, it makes perfect sense.

I grabbed it from the Clever Blokes yesterday, along with a whole pile of necklaces for not a lot.

May I ask a stupid question? I've become so visual as I age so I printed out the photo to see which way it goes.

Are any of these correct? The second one makes the most sense I think but the dark line doesn't make sense.

Yup. I doubt this one is truly "ethnic"; my guess is it's just a nice fancy buckle.

The second one was what looked the best to me too but it seems like it might sort of flap open.

I wonder if there was a keeper where the dark line is.

Ah well, lovely to look at however it works:)
