I was told you can give a rough estimate of a date by the clothing the person is wearing. Can anyone tell? I was told it's 1800s. It certainly looks like something from that time. But, maybe someone can narrow the window.

It's a beauty, especially the clothing.

At a guess, I'd think he was 1850s or a tad later based on the frock coat with the high collar and wide lapels, matching vest and puff tie. But I could be wrong. Would/could you post a photograph of the back?

The chin beard would help date it too if someone knows beards.

A "chinstrap." Popular in the 1850s.

He could even be a tad earlier with the lank hair and those side curls. Here's Bulwer-Lytton in the 1840s with similar tie pin and watch chain. His frock coat also has that higher collar.

Thank you. The back is nothing special. No hair or anything.

I would love to know who this is and who painted it. It might be on the back. I just don't want to destroy the piece opening it up.

Imagine walking around the house dressed like that all day long, in the summer. In the winter, you'd stay warm.

1850s - 60s... It's a great piece. The person also had a verifable Dali print of Picasso. It sold for hundreds more than I could have paid. But, the person still got a bargain. I'm happy with my mini portrait. It takes talent to do that, and so small.
