    Now that I think about it all my Georgian sewing boxes have locks, some keys are missing though and it's best not to lock them anyway...
    Maybe it was to stop servants from stealing things such as pieces of embroidery etc...

    Not to mention the sterling thimbles & other sewing objects that they may have contained. ;):rolleyes::facepalm::happy::happy:

    Yes that's right, some ladies would have had silver thimbles, even gold ones in them, expensive embroidery silks and so on, these boxes weren't for everyday mundane sewing items ...

    Peggy is spot on. These had sterling thimbles, scissors and other accessories.

    I saw pictures of a Napoleonic set done in 18k recently. It only cost US$6000, so I left it for the next guy.
