Here's a large 19th century Japanese vessel I bought a few weeks ago. Each of the four panels is decorated differently, for the four seasons. I've never seen that shape before.

It has great geopolitical significance, if little cash value. Once upon a time the Eighth Army considered it worth while to kick the Germans and Rommel out of Libya, and for a while under the slightly British influenced rule of King Idris, shops existed with boxes printed in English to sell this sort of thing to tourists.

Then Gadaffi took over and the rest is mostly downhill to the present.

So although the item is of modest value, it reflects a briefly civilised period in the turbulent history of North Africa, a region that in the period since the decline and fall of Egypt has never produced a stable state, although if Carthage had ticked off the Romans a little less, they might have lasted longer.

The objects just hang about, the history is in your head.

The little wood angel is from Erzgebirge (Germany) and probably made by Wendt and Kuhn.
