I hope @Marote doesn't mind -- but I picked this up today at my local charity shop!

Bone & Bamboo, a vintage souvenir set, probably from Hong Kong in the 1970s. The case in spectacular condition, considering, as I said before - the cases on these things were literally made of cardboard, and are the first things to go...

    BBset001.jpg BBset002.jpg BBset004.jpg BBset005.jpg

The set is all-complete, with no missing pieces or parts. Here or there might need a drop of glue to hold it in place again, but that's easily fixed.

I have seen sets like this before, and they just NEVER last. The cases are held together by duct-tape, shoelaces, and our faith in the Lord...but not in this case! It's a very, very rare survivor!!

The tiles are roughly 33/66 bone / bamboo, so pretty decent quality, but not spectacular.

Not at all. I want to see all your sets and those of others here. :)

And this one is indeed in a spectacular condition.
Maybe it was the faith in the Lord that kept it in such good condition.
I think the previous owner of the incomplete set I mentioned 2 weeks ago, had more faith in the devil ...

One of my vintage sets got a solid workout today!!

My brother, my cousin, her husband, and I, all know how to play mahjong, having learned it at various times in our lives.

My cousin-in-law and I both learned it as kids, my brother learned it from my SIL, and my cousin learned it from her husband. But my cousin's sister had never learned.

Today, during the family Christmas luncheon, she demanded to learn how to play!...

My cousin teaching her sister the finer points of the game...

Shuffling the tiles! Or what's called "dry swimming".

    My cousin won!!...beginner's luck, right?

So yes, just because sets are vintage, or even antique, is no reason not to play with them. This set is the better part of 80 years old, and it's no worse for wear having been smacked around for four hours.

Whenever my family gets together (Christmas, Easter, Chinese New Year, etc), we always find an excuse to have a game of mahjong!! :)

We were playing nonstop between about 1-30 to 5-30/6-00. Soooo...4, 4.5 hours, maybe??

Added 4 of these to the collection (all 4 with different scene)
These are, of course, counting stick boxes (that coincidentally have a slot that can hold mahjong tiles), and definitely not racks, because this isn't Scrabble ;)

    The latest addition.
Tiles are bamboo. Sticks are bone. Unfortunatelly 1 of the wind indicators is missing :( image2.jpeg image0.jpeg

I wouldn't worry. I've been playing mahjong over 20 years, and I've never known anybody who ever uses them.

I'm not worried, but it would be nice if it had been there :) (but it was already missing in the add pics, so it wasn't a surprise it wasn't included)
Instead, the box included a set of keys that clearly didn't belong to the set. Sent a message to the seller, asking him to send that 4th indicator if he happens to find it, but also asking if I needed to send the keys back. I can see he read the message, but he didn't reply!

Small keys, probably for a small metal box/safe, and possibly not important to the seller. Still weird he didn't reply at all.
