Middle East is well known for these boxes. Syria and Egypt, particularly. They don't bring as much as you would think, given the amount of work that goes into them. I just sold a set of three graduated hexagonal ones for $45.00. Mine were nearly new, whereas yours seem to at least have a little age to them. I might have gotten more but these are not big sellers for me and I was happy for the profit.

 

I'd have figured older Syrian, but they're made all over . The ones with the red lining are newer. Proper wood is older. That said, I'd give those house room any time.

Might be Persian, too. Not Moroccan and not Granada ware.

 

Add this in the "had to pay up file". Have been wanting a copy of this book for a long time and recently finally got one. Condition is not great, but it is from 1875 after all.

 

Book looks like great fun. Congrats on (finally) adding it to your collection.

Cincinnati: the Queen City, aka Porkopolis. In Cincinnati, you say "Please?" when you didn't hear someone and you want them to repeat what they said. Apparently it's a literal translation of "Bitte?" auf Deutsch, since there were so many Germans in early Cincy, many settling in the 'Uber der Rhein' neighborhood (which of course was the Ohio river).

 

Your book @Joe2007 reminds me of this Tom Sawyer I've had for years. 'Condition issues,' but still old.

 

I commute into work, blocks away from Over-the-Rhine, each day. Amazing architecture, overflowing history, and one of the best-preserved urban districts in the country. Makes me want to collect breweriana due to all of the breweries, beer halls, corner bars that used to be everywhere in Cincinnati.

 

I don't think any of them are post 1970's and I think none of them date before 1950's, Egyptian or Moroccan would be the best I could come up with as well. The bottom 3 are a cut above the norm and if they were made 60 years earlier they would be very costly, they are often mistaken for Sadeli or Khatam (same process) but not just as fine but saying that the bottom 3 are very good in workmanship. Nice boxes, a friend once bought me one of these thinking it was what I collected, I didn't have the heart to tell him it wasn't. I just think because tourism was far more common in the 50's and 60's many more of these boxes were produced making them far more plentiful than tourist boxes made in the 1860's-1920's or maybe just more survived the shorter period?

 

Just a few things to show from the last several weeks. Pickings for good stuff have been kind of slim.

Not too great but any standard glaze vase for $2.00 is worth getting. Unmarkeed other than with a number. Found another on ebay but seller doesn't know either. My gut feeling is that it could be European.


Blenko iceberg bookend for $3.00. Wish I had the pair, as they can go for over $300.


Bought these three clocks for $45.00 total. Have been tinkering with the second one a bit and can get it to run for a 1/2 hour a so before it stops. Haven't worked with the other two yet. All are wound tight and may just need to get unwound a bit and cleaned.


Best find here and will post in the corresponding thread. 18" Fantoni/Raymor vase. Bought for $15.00.

 

Today's find is my sister and BiL's Christmas present next week. Michael Sosin "Kanji" glass vase in green. Paid $5. My guess is it never had the lid shown, or if it did it's been gone for years. My niece is into glassmaking and Asian art, and this guy is too.

Brad, I’ll bet that vase is Belgian.

 

Charity shop £1. Silver collar, probably Italian from the marks near the clasp, the pendant is unmarked but looks likely to be silver too. Wouldn’t suit everybody but well made.

 

Looks like the "stone" is some type of glass.
