No marks at all? In what part of the world did you find it and what were you told about it?

It's really hard to see your item. Is that the best photograph you have?

Spanish, called by collectors an Abacete dagger. generally, these tend to be quite old, probably early to mid 1800's.
I have I must admit, never seen one with a handle like this, they are usually brass and ivory or bone in the centre, like the attached image.

And welcome to the forum by the way!

Thanks to the blacksmith for the pic and his comments. I think that Roaring20s might be on to a line of inquiry concerning the Philippines. I had a woman relative who served as a nurse in the Spanish American War in the Philippines.

Indeed RJM52, a typo on my part, sory about that ! It is indeed Albacete.

Navaja means knife in Spanish, or more accurately, razor, theough the term is often used mainly for the large folding knife that was popular in Andalucia.

Thanks for everyone’s input. Should I remove the surface rust from the blade? If so, how? Thank you.

the blade should be oiled and honed.... @the blacksmith may have better ides for removing the rust..... which looks heavily pitted from here...

It is hard to tell, but I think it is surface rust Komo. If it is, then steel wool and Solvol Autosol would be my recommendation, though a bar of soap, or if nothing else is available, them just oil. Solvol would be my first choice though, it is cheap, avaialble in most pertol stations and leaves a thin protective film on the metal afterwards.

Incidentaly, I have to disagree with Komo about honing the blade. It is an antique and not going to be used again............... is it!:shifty: These were probably not very sharp in anycase, they were really only intended for stabbing. Certainl the Albacete daggers that I have had have never been sharp, just wickedly pointed.
