Featured why did they lock up eggs ???

a little research indicates that this LOCKING egg cabinet is probably Edwardian (1900-1910) although I can't confirm that - it has small signs of worm activity - and an old skeleton key lock - but why ? why would they have had a need to lock up the eggs ? historically it comes before WWI - the depression - prohibition - when things mayhave been more precious - why lock up eggs ?

 

Food is locked up to prevent servants from stealing.

Maybe it's Russian and they were trying to protect the Faberge Eggs?

 

Or in a bar and they were locking up the hard-boiled eggs so that drinkers couldn't eat more than the one or two they paid for.

 

or in a country home...where the dog would eat anything it could find...

 

I find it interesting that so many of them have windows in the front, instead of just wooden slats...but they still wanted to lock them up??
