I think it is. I hope it is. Please tell me it is. I've been on pins and needles all day waiting to post some pics.

I bought everything left in a home after the family took what they wanted. There was a large collection of Newcomb when I went to the house the first time, but they donated it to the museum at Tulane. I'm glad they did, as the pieces they had were definitely museum worthy and need to be enjoyed by all.

They did leave this behind, which I happily wrapped up and brought home with me today. I think it's a moon & moss vase that's been converted to a lamp. Should I risk dismantling the lamp to verify or is it best to leave it as is? 20241209_152830_resized.jpg 20241209_152837_resized.jpg 20241209_152846_resized.jpg 20241209_152857_resized.jpg

I'm no pottie but my nose is twitching. Vellum glazes and landscapes have to make you wonder.

Looks good to me ! By the way Sassafras-If my ancient brain recalls correctly,I think Miss Evely is the only other member here to have shared a piece of Newcomb with us.
PS-Might you judiciously share a bit of the backstory on the family who had this piece-ie provenance ?
PSS-No need to mention the specific address ( i'd only send my Tulane attending nephew over to root thru the dumpster !!!).

I blind-lucked into mine at a cleanout sale in a warehouse. The people doing the selling just knew their boss wanted the stuff gone. The OP's piece apparently got a little more love from the family.

If it isn't, it's doing a pretty damn good imitation. :p:p:smuggrin::smuggrin::smuggrin:

However, you will never know for sure unless you dismantle the lamp parts & it is not like you will ruin anything by taking it apart.

The only reason I would want to check is I would always wonder & if a museum is offered something they usually will check out the collection beforehand & would likely send someone to collect the items.

So if the lamp was sitting out, why didn't they take it also?:confused:

Don't get me wrong. I am crossing all of my fingers that they screwed up & it is the real deal. Then you have a beautiful lamp to enjoy for a long time or you get to enjoy it until someone pays you a lot of money to take it home. ;):D:D

That's incredible @evelyb30. I bet you couldn't give them your money fast enough! :)

    I'm so excited!!!

The owner passed away at 96 with no heirs except for her second husband's niece & nephew who live in England. Her longtime caretaker and the executor of her estate have been using Facetime with them so that they can make decisions on what to do with the contents of her home. They kept very little besides the fine jewelry and family heirlooms, which they are having shipped to them. They have donated some of her collections and fine artwork to museums. There were some fabulous things and you can tell she lived a very full and wonderful life!

I did an estate sale for the executor in the past and he called to see if I would be interested in buying the remainder of the estate. When I did the walkthrough everything was still there, so I got to see all of the Newcomb before it got packed for it's trip to the museum. I was shocked to see the lamp was still there yesterday. Perhaps they decided not to donate it since it had been altered from a vase?

I'll double check with her caretaker, but I'm pretty sure she said that the owner's great aunt worked for Newcomb. She has a lot of things that were passed down from her, as she was the aunt's only relative. This lady was the last of her bloodline.

With this history, can't imagine this is not Newcomb. I think the fact that it was made into a lamp is why it was left. Also it sounds like the relatives packaged things up to bring to the museum, the museum didn't come out, right? Clearly overlooked. Lucky!

It's stunning. I love the moon on the side.

Thank you! Through many Facetime calls, the family decided what items they wanted donated to museums. The caretaker (who loved her dearly) and executor packed the smaller items and the larger items were picked up. There were some gorgeous paintings!

Looks right to me. I would dismantle this to find out for sure. Not a hard thing to do. Lay it on the side. Grasp the socket so that it does not turn, and there should be a nut on the bottom to remove. You will need to dismanle the socket to remove the wiring if you want to do so.

I'd bet it has the magic NC on the bottom. I thought mine was CN at first, because I"m not a pottie and had never seen the mark before. It took a minute for the penny to drop.

It's a vase again! And there is a magic NC on the bottom. :woot:
Google tells me the "JM" is for Joseph Meyer, who threw it. I don't see any other codes that would indicate the date or artist though. 20241210_170831_resized.jpg 20241210_171317_resized.jpg 20241210_171302_resized.jpg
