Featured Majestron Watch: Punk, SteamPunk, or?

Metalware was an option, as was Tools...but here's where I was pretty sure I was gonna be safe.
Movement was made in Japan...an' I assume there's a battery inside; the crown is so well buried under the beaded border that just accessing it for setting the time would be a real challenge, let alone winding the thing. So it isn't running, but probably will with a new button cell. The band is permanently attached to the body, btw.
When might this have been a must-have fashion accessory among a certain portion of the youthful population? Would it have been in the US, or UK...Australia, Canada...or?
Any an' all of your comments, observations or insights about this wierdest-of-all-time pieces (sorry) are welcome.
