Saw this pair of Foo Dogs today & found them charming in a crude/grotesque way. They're about a foot tall, have old paint or gesso over the wood and seem to have been mitered or doweled together during construction.
Wondering if anyone here can guesstimate their age or point of origin.
    I may/may not buy them-just thought I'd run them by you all-thanks !

I like them. Fairly ugly but interesting. I would definitely buy if the price is good. That said I do wonder.. Not sure at all about possible age.. Personally I think not that old (but really have no idea)

Not the most beautiful pair.... Think these have some age and see similar listed as 19th century. Could well be but also think could be well into the 20th century. Seem to have had a bit of a hard life. Some of these can be pricey so it really depends on what they are selling for as to whether or not they are worth getting. As can be seen by the comments here, they are not going to appeal to everyone.

    They're a pair of pug uglies- I can barely even make out their faces.Selling for $170 ea,so if they were 18th Cent-good value/19th Cent-?/20th Cent-prob a bust.
I think the whole value thing would mostly depend on age since they definitely aint the pretties Foos i've seen.
PS-No offense to Pug fans !

We were watching the Westminster or Bedminster (?) dog show & yep-a pug took top honors ! Cute little fellers but not my peak of beauty in a pooch-plus flattening their faces via breeding-not good for overall respiratory.

They’ve got a real interesting look and I like them. I don’t like that the finish/patina is so different in them though. Pairs are more desirable but they are so different looking I’m not sure it’s too helpful here. I’d try to find some more examples that are constructed in two pieces like that. Maybe you can nail down a date range that way. How big are they? Without knowing more I wouldn’t pay that much each. If you do decide to buy without knowing more I’d maybe consider buying just the one without the broken foot. He is more attractive in my opinion anyways and has his foot. I’d kind of think if they were earlier than the 19th that a solid piece of good wood would have been available and the carving might be a bit better. That’s more guesswork though. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear they were pre 19th either. I don’t blame you for looking at them and posting, they are neat. I love foo dogs in general. I bought a bowl with a goofy foo dog in it today.

They are interesting, even though I can barely make out the face of either one (!). Superb point re them being a pair but the finish being rather different.
The 2 part construction being a clue to age is a good point.
They're roughly 14" tall by 21" long and heavy.
I don't hit antique malls much anymore, just garage, estate & thrifts-so anything costing more than a few twenties is in the code red zone for me !
    Thanks for the input.
PS-Will be posting a (supposedly ?) old bronze Buddha head-another case of old or nice repro needing opinions.

Yikes! Ok well I kind of like looking at them but in a short time I’m done:bored:. I do find the split down the middle on both of them interesting. You say they have been doweled? Seems a bit odd, as if they can be opened.

    very interesting pair

That’s pretty big! Someone would like them but unless they are older than late 19th that price would be hard to profit at. That foot would hold them back a lot I think too if not really old.

One must have spent part of its life somewhere quite different than the other. Maybe outside for a bit or by a door or window or something.
