I also think it hanged many years in the smokers corner (snow looks a little yellow)The canvas and painting looked older than the frame to me. But then I noted some faded writing on the back of the canvas. A name (looks ‘amateur’ hand)and what looks like possible 1974? So is this painting and frame both from the 70’s? Amateur painting? Not sure of the possible date. Is that a “9” ?. What do you all think? The frame size 58x48cm. Thank you

Maybe the signature is hidden by the frame..

    Agree. I like it.
That looks like the stable, with cart tracks leading up to it. You will both feel more comfortable in the farmhouse next to it, the one with the chimney, which means you can sit by the fire.:)

Any opinion as to the age of the painting?

The framing looks 1960s/1970s which is when those linen liners were popular.

Thanks Debora,I agree regarding the framing. But personally I think the canvas and painting might be older.

It could be as old as the 1930s. I have one by a known local painter, the same mood and impasto and roughly the same style, it is dated 1936.

Yes, it could be older, of course, but my feeling is the frame is original.

Personally, I am not impressed with the composition. Both buildings on the same plane, and huge pile of snow covered dirt in front of house not a plus. Wagon lines do seem amateur. Just my personal opinion. I’m sure I am hanging onto some pieces no one else would.

A fairly common, an' forgivable, failing. No Blame!

I don't hate it but dark and without enough redeeming qualities to push it into the like range for me (and I generally like dark paintings). It bothers me that the two buildings have little perpective. I also think contemporary to the frame.

Yes, my wife is happy to point this out to me. Except for the forgivable part. :bored:

A debatable thing then. I can certainly understand liking and also not liking it. Anyway thank you for all the comments and perspectives.

I think many of us can relate to hanging onto ‘borderline’ items.
