Featured anyone know what fur coat

hi folks

something else i picked up at local auction, was sold as a faux fur but obvious what it was

wondering what kind of fur it is

has a silk lining with what remains of a stitched in monogram

not sure about age either

also has taken on that musty smell, so need to try and get that sorted before selling it

never had any success before getting rid of that smell, febreze i find just makes musty clothes worse

dry cleaning would probably be too expensive

any toughts or info very much appreciated

 

has only one closure near the top so don't know if any others are missing

 

Looks like mink. 1950s chubby.

I've had problems over the years with the tiny moths that damage wool, silk, fur etc. I see some spots in your fur that would make be wonder if there might be moth damage.

I've spent years trying to rid my house of the wee moths so I'm extra paranoid. Hope yours isn't infested.

I have always had lavender bags in my closets etc, but these moths seem to like lavender, cedar, and anything else I've tried. They also like to eat synthetic textiles, which no self-respecting moth should do.

 

My grandmother used moth balls and when I opened her closets way back when, I all but passed out from their smell. I have her mink coat here. Does not smell at all. She was short like me. Has her initials inside I believe.

 

"Buy some bags of Lavender and hang them in closets, wardrobes and drawers.
Moth be gone."

Oh if life were that simple. I love lavender and grow it in my garden.

I first became aware of my moths as they were eating their way through wool oriental rugs about eight years ago. In fairly short order I had to remove all my wool rugs, all my wool sweaters and anything made of wool, fur or silk as they were all infested to some degree. I steamed and/or baked on low heat all my rugs, sprayed some with bug spray then sealed in bags in my garage. Silly me, I thought I could bring them back quickly. I've thrown many out as they are damaged.

I "think" I'm finally rid of the moths after steaming my wall to wall carpet and vacuuming over and over for years now but have yet to bring wool back in.

 

Exactly. Having lavender bags with your clothes is customary here, my grandmother already had them.

hi sis, yeah there was a few of those little areas, but luckily they just brush through, thought the same at first, but its just where the fur is sticking out a bit or ruffled

In the old days they sold some "moth proof" wool, but the chemicals used were probably toxic to apply if not wear. I just know vintage skeins of same sold for $$ about a decade ago.

The fur coat - if damaged, pet shelters LOVE those for use with bottle babies.

 

I had an estate sale friend who only purchased fur coats. At that time she was getting orders left and right from Russia.

 

More and more you are seeing furs again. I once worked the coat room at a private club and I used to love to bury my face in all that lush fur and smell the perfume .When the room was full it smelled heavenly. Sorry to all the anti fur folks !
