Probably, also possibly a price sticker left to sit there forever. Some have acid in the paper and can leave marks.

Lol, I haven’t been to Stroud for ages but it looks like I should have visited! It’s a great little town, lots of independent shops, a slightly hippy atmosphere and lots of crystals to improve your aura :joyful:

Hello! Finally have a moment to respond to some of your lovely comments.

The Cairngorm goes up 1 on the gem tester.

The wax being a replacement was a thought my mother also had. It's a good shout!

Tested the amethyst for fun again, earrings are glass (no reaction), the bar brooch is now going up 1 on the bar, still glass or maybe amethyst?

I normally have it on 3! sometimes I play with it depending on the temp but 3 is the usual.

Also, I need to correct, its not Stroud, its Gloucester I went to lol! I'm not used to us going there so I mixed it up.

About the sentimental brooch: I've tested for gold and its all a little odd. I first tested front and back with 9k and it was evaporating semi slowly but looked like it was bubbling first, like tiny air bubbles where the test mark was. I tried a second time on front back and pin, and there was no bubbling but a slow fade to brown.

Here's some photos under a loupe of the edges. It looks like plate that's worn off but also like they've constructed it this way? Like there's two bits of gold with a metal/silver piece in the middle? It shines up beautifully with the sunshine cloth

If you have it on three, and both the Cairngorm and the amethyst go up one, they are both glass. Just to be sure, have you checked the tester on a stone you know?
Glass isn't unusual for the amethyst one. Those little silver bar brooches were mostly in the lower price range to begin with.
Scottish pebble brooches usually have genuine Cairngorms, but sometimes glass copies.
    Yes, it is gold plated.
