    Hi all,
I purchased this little seal carving the other day at a little antique store in Rio Linda California.
I have found little about the carver Aaron Gologergen. I know he lived in Savoonga Alaska on St Lawrence Island and is 67 years old. He is Siberian Yupik I believe.
Also apparently this was sold at a mount Edgecumbe crafts store on Kruzof island.
I really would like to know what the material is that the carving is made of.
It is hard to explain. grain, swirls, reflective looks like metallic or pearl?
    Any information is greatly appreciated.
    Mikey

    Could it be petrified wood?

I was thinking maybe petrified wood. I shined a light on it and is not transparent at all. Thanks for helping.

I'd think soapstone would be more likely - native soapstone often has an apparent grain structure, and may include glittery mica flakes. And the greenish/brownish/gray color looks right. I once found a piece of soapstone on a beach that looks very much like this.
You should be able to easily hide the scratches by rubbing lightly with some organic oil - such as might be found on one's face or hair, for example.
