    Hi

I was looking for some help in identifying when and where this sewing box on stand was produced. The inside lid is a lacquered panel which I assume is Japanese and to my eye seems to be of a nice quality.

The box and stand it is set into is made of wood with an ebonised finish, this is further decorated in an oriental style but nowhere near to the quality of the panel in the lid. I am thinking the box and stand was probably made here in England to house the Japanese panel. Does anybody have any thoughts or observations as I am a bit out of my depth in this area of antiques.

    Many Thanks

the butterfly lock looks like a replacement as do the hinges. I love chinoiserie pieces. how is the box mounted underneath. Could it be a dressing box?

Thanks for your reply. I think the lock plate may be original, with the wear to the ebonising around it being caused by operating the key, the hinges are definitely modern replacements. The box locates on the stand with 4 wooden pegs slotting into corresponding holes on the bottom of the box. It could well be a dressing box, as I say it is not an area I have much knowledge in, the box without the stand measures 56 x 40 x 18cms.

I see the wear around the lock plate - we used get English chinoiserie pieces at the auction house and the wear around locks, etc were manufactured so I am always skeptical. That is good about the wooden pegs.

Well spotted. Silver is my thing and it has mainly flatware and spoons in all the compartments and tray underneath, but they are not are contemporary to the box, they are all much older pieces I have collected over the years and I thought it was a useful item to store them in.
